Need help with a color scheme for my bedroom?

i am not by any means a good decorator, and i don't have much money to put towards my project but i am trying really hard to re-decorate our bedroom with the means that i have.. we rent our apartment, and our bedroom is painted a mint like green color that we are not allowed to paint over, so that has to be one of my colors. i already have a comforter that is the mint green on one side and is a darker green on the other, and i also a chocolate brown colored duvet set with the pillow shams and 1 decorative pillow, and i also have 2 tan colored decorative pillows, and then today i bought a pair of really inexpensive chocolate brown floor length ds to go on the window. but i would love to add another color, maybe something in a red or burgundy color, you know something that will brighten things up so that it isn't so dark. i plan on making some art work for the walls with these same colors, and maybe tying in some flowers in a vase and some candles for the chest of drawers.. do these colors sound like they work well together? or would you go with something completely different. i want our bedroom to have a complete change, something to surprise my husband.. but i have to be thrifty with it.. any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated.. thanks!
