Why is the south of England much better looking than the north of England?

Southern England, has cleaner cities and beautiful little towns and villages with Thatched Cottages, beautiful churches and the buildings are nice colours.. sandy or white... the south just looks more cheery... the north everything is brown or grey, the cities are dirty and the buildings are all 90% the same, all the villages look like Emerdale, which is not that good looking to me? The north also has hardly any trees, just bleak moors.
